Justin Brown, Music Director Laureate, returns for his second Masterworks performance of the 2012-2013 Season. His program features two rarities of the concert hall. First, the ASO's distinguished concertmaster, Daniel Szasz, will play Gerald Finzi's Violin Concerto, which is lovely music from the English pastoral tradition. Then tenor Nicholas Phan returns to Birmingham to sing Benjamin Britten's "Les Illuminations;" the libretto consists of atmospheric poems by the great French poet Arthur Rimbaud. These two treats are bookended with Sibelius's mystical Sixth and Seventh Symphonies — works that explore the depths of human experience in the universe.
