The GBMEA StringFest is a festival for beginning, intermediate and advanced string students. Students will come together for a fun day of string instruction. The day is designed to inspire young string players and provide the opportunity for a hands on, mentored orchestral experience.

Orchestra Placements

Teachers, please place your students according to the following guidelines. Please note these are skill levels only. They are to be used to give you an idea for the appropriate skill level for each orchestra.

Prelude Orchestra*-  Level A requirements- Must be able to read music and perform proficiently in Suzuki Books 1-3

Festival Orchestra*- Level B requirements- Must be able to read music and perform proficiently in Suzuki Book 4 and above

*Please consult with your school/private teachers to make sure you register for the ensemble most appropriate for your playing level.

Please note that this festival is a non-competitive festival. The conductors will determine seating in conjunction with the StringFest staff’s recommendation. All seating assignments will be made for the benefit of the ensembles, and ensemble members will be expected to abide by those seating assignments.


The Greater Birmingham Music Educators Alliance was formed to unite local music educators dedicated to bringing resources in music education to the greater community. The charter members include the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Music Opportunity Program, Metropolitan Youth Orchestra/Scrollworks, and Suzuki Talent Education Program (STEP).

The mission of the GBMEA is to strengthen and centralize collaboration between existing entities dedicated to music education with the goals of advancing music education, increasing participation in youth orchestra and growing awareness of symphonic arts and cultural offerings for youth and adults in the greater Birmingham region.

Registration Information

Registration for students is $25.00 (includes t-shirt and lunch). The deadline to register is January 28th. Any registrations received after the deadline will cost $35.00. All registration and payment should be submitted online. If there are any issues with this, please contact Maria Wilson:

We need parents who will volunteer– moving chairs & stands, assisting in set-up, man tables, coordinate snacks, and generally being available to assist us. There is a space on the registration form for parents to volunteer.
