Mark Wilson
Double BassOriginally from Fremont, Ohio, Mark Wilson began his musical studies at the age of 6 under the tutelage of his mother on the piano. He began the double bass at age 10 in the string program of the City of Fremont Public Schools and by age 16 became the first double bassist to solo with orchestra at the Ohio Music Educators Convention in Columbus, Ohio. Later that same year he won the Congress of Strings Competition for his district in Northwest Ohio and began commuting for lessons with the legendary Lawrence P. Hurst at the University of Michigan.
Mr. Wilson graduated from the University of Michigan in 1977 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance and received his Master's Degree in 1979 also from Michigan. While at Michigan, Mark had a teaching fellowship and was winner of the Roberta Wolf Siegel Award. He also had a fellowship for three summers at Interlochen.
In the fall of 1979, Mr. Wilson was awarded the position of Principal Bass of the Omaha Symphony which he declined. In 1980 he won a position with the Alabama Symphony. He has served as Adjunct Professor of Double Bass at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and Jacksonville State University as well as double bass teacher at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and the Music Opportunity Program. When not playing music Mr. Wilson likes to travel and explore the outdoors.
