Philip Copeland

Director, ASO Chorus

Philip L. Copeland, conductor, has led the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Chorus for the past fifteen years.  He is also Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Samford University. Choirs under his direction have distinguished themselves on the national and international stage, winning significant awards in nine international competitions and performing concerts in multiple conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Collegiate Choral Organization, and on the stage of Carnegie Hall.  In 2023, the Samford choir won first place in the CantaRode International competition and was also awarded the prestigious “Audience prize.” At that competition, Dr. Copeland was named “Best Conductor.”  A long-time church musician, Dr. Copeland has over thirty years of experience in sacred music and serves at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Birmingham.  Dr. Copeland is married to Tracy and together they raise their six children:  Catherine, Caroline, Claire, Caroline, Claire, and Catelyn.
