UAB’s Alys Stephens Center — Jemison Concert HallJoin Carlos Izcaray and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra for Independence — an evening that celebrates artistic vision and creative freedom, culminating in the world premiere of Maestro Izcaray’s Symphony No. 1.
The concert opens with Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, a luminous work of reflection and memory. Its shimmering textures and soaring harmonies have made it one of the most frequently performed contemporary orchestral pieces in the country — music that speaks to both fragility and transcendence.
Next comes Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor, one of his most emotionally intense works. There’s an urgency and drama to this symphony that feels almost modern, bridging the elegance of the Classical era with something more turbulent and deeply felt.
The evening closes with the premiere of Carlos Izcaray’s Symphony No. 1, written for this performance. In his first symphonic work, Maestro Izcaray explores themes of resilience, independence, and the search for balance in uncertain times — a personal statement from the podium.
This is a night about artistic courage and the power of individual voice, connecting established masterworks with new music created for this moment. We hope you’ll join us for this special premiere.
