Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO), an integral component of the Birmingham arts scene, is excited to introduce a new patron experience volunteer program intended to engage our community members while improving the overall concert experience for our patrons and guests. As the ASO gears up for its 2024/2025 concert season, this initiative seeks to tap local music lovers by offering them a chance to give back to the community and enjoy symphonic music themselves. As the ASO strives to strengthen ties between orchestra and community, this program invites volunteers to play an essential part in performances, outreach, and education activities. No matter your musical experience or artistic appreciation level, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s volunteer program promises an enriching experience for everyone involved.
With two orientation and training sessions offered in September by experienced staff members, participants were prepared for their volunteer roles at Alys Stephens Center and the other venues where ASO performs. This approach not only equips volunteers with the skills required for fulfilling their responsibilities but also fosters a deeper appreciation of all the behind-the-scenes roles required to ensure the safety and positive experience at every concert. The ASO believes well-informed volunteers can serve as enthusiastic ambassadors, helping promote concerts and educational events while sharing what they’ve learned with friends, family, and the broader public. By encouraging individuals to assume leadership roles within its program, the ASO aims to foster an ecosystem of passionate supporters for arts advocacy.

With almost 100 new volunteers registered by early October, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s volunteer program looks set to play a critical role in its growth and sustainability. Volunteers will help the organization thrive within an ever-shifting cultural landscape while building vital relationships essential for its mission. Their efforts will amplify a sense of community while spreading ASO sounds across Alabama for generations.

Sign-ups are open all season long. During the remainder of 2024, mentor roles will be available for all new volunteers, and a new training session will be offered in early January 2025.
