Trombone
Masa Ohtake joined the Alabama Symphony Orchestra as second trombonist in 2022. His previous professional engagements include appearances with the Atlanta and Seattle
Symphony Orchestras, the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, and as Guest-Principal Trombonist with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Masa has spent his summers performing with the
Artosphere Festival Orchestra, Bellingham Festival of Music, Festival Mozaic, and Spoleto Festival USA.
Masa serves as the low-brass instructor at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and is a guest faculty artist of the Southeast Trombone Symposium every summer. He is a frequent guest conductor and clinician for the Columbus State University Schwob Trombone Ensemble, and was a co-director of the Florida State University Trombone Choir from 2021 to 2023.
Born in Gifu, Japan, Masa spent his childhood in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois and Lawrence, Kansas where his father and mother pursued their respective graduate studies. His own academic and musical pursuits have led him through Seattle, New York City, Los Angeles, Columbus (GA), and Tallahassee (FL). His mentors include Dr. John Drew, Dr. Bradley Palmer,
Mark Lawrence, David Finlayson, Ko-ichiro Yamamoto, and Dr. James Michael Hall.
Masa is an S.E. Shires performing artist and plays exclusively on Ultimate Brass mouthpieces.
