UAB’s Alys Stephens Center — Jemison Concert HallHolst’s The Planets & Walton’s Viola Concerto
Daniel Cho leads the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in one of the most spectacular works in the orchestral repertoire: Gustav Holst’s The Planets, a seven-movement suite that travels from the driving, martial energy of “Mars” to the ethereal wordless chorus of “Neptune.” The program also features Walton’s Viola Concerto — brooding, lyrical, and among the finest concertos written for the instrument — performed by ASO Principal Viola Tiantian Lan in his Alabama soloist debut. The evening opens with Leonard Slatkin’s Voyager 130, a contemporary work that extends the cosmic theme into the present day.
